CryptoLocker is a type of malware called “ransomware” is was introduced sometime in late 2013. It targets all present versions of Microsoft Windows. So if you are running OS X or Linux you are OK for now.
It has made a Huge Scare and rightfully so as one of the most harmful and most sophisticated malware variants out there. It targeting everything from individuals to police departments and even law firms. Its goal is to lock/encrypt your frequently used files like documents, spreadsheets, pdf’s and picture files. When it gets on your computer it immediately goes to work locking up/encrypting all your data files. This get ugly really fast.
CryptoLocker can and will encrypt/lock all mapped devices with write access. The only way to maybe decrypt the files is to pay a ransom to the originator of the malware (good luck with that). The ransom can is generally $300 +++.
Cryptolocker doesn’t require administrative rights. It doesn’t need to install anything, it doesn’t even require elevated privileges which makes it even more powerful.Any data file with write-access is vulnerable and it is going to take some really aggressive policies to protect them.
This malware can be distributed via e-mail or downloaded from a web link. Be careful when opening up e-mail attachments or clicking on links. There are emails going around with files disguised as important notifications such as UPS, FedEx, PayPal etc..
CryptoLocker can not presently be totally blocked by using commercial anti-virus solutions because of its capability to act like legitimate software. One way to block it is to disable Windows file-sharing which is not an desirable option.
So what should you do?
Of course my 1st recommendation is to not use Windows to access the internet or your email. Use a VirusProofPC or a Mac – Problem Solved
Other precautions:
Keep your anti-virus program up to date and your applications patched.
Keep frequent back ups of your data on an off-line resource for simpler recovery of files.
