Data loss can happen to anyone
This is my personal work computer. One that I’m on all day. I got myself a little surprise here today when I went to do a restart and to login. This is what I got “User profile Login Failed” so I can’t get in. I don’t have another admin.
I normally have another administrator specifically for this. Actually I recommend people to just have a dummy administrator account so you can just get right back in there. I don’t have one. I do have backups so that I can go back and look for restore image. I’m not going to do that at the moment but I’m going to try to see if I can just repair this.
The point of this video is that today is Monday just came to work and all of a sudden bam! My computer is down. Luckily, I have some resources I will be able to get it back up as soon as possible. If this happens to you in your work environment you are pretty much out of commission. So you are always going to have your plan B and your plan C. One of them that we recommend is that a full image of your hard drive. That’s one of the services that we can provide you with. Other than that of course you would give us a call and we’ll go and do a rush service. So I’ll do a follow up with this so we’ll how we get this back up and running but just to let you know any minute your computer will go down.
Continuing the recovery process
We are back doing this recovery. Basically as an exercise I went through a couple other steps to see if we can recover my operating system. One of them was to activate the administrator account which is hidden in the operating system. That actually failed so I got some problems with my computer here, so that failed. We also did last known configuration which failed. We went to create a restore point and that did not work. I have multiple hard drives and the boot system. I use grub as the boot manager so maybe that created a problem with the system restore. So all of those things failed, actually even a safe mode boot was failing so all the preliminary steps failed.
Basically what I actually have as my kind of failsafe backup which is my Acronis images which I have every night. I have an image backup and you got to stay on top of it thought sometimes you know that could go wrong and then come here and your stuff is gone. So I’ve got two images. One from last night, and one from the night before. I normally keep four or five but I recently deleted a few just for space so hopefully we should be good with that so that’s where we are at.
Using an additional drive to restore to
The other thing that I did just for a little tip is I am using another hard drive to restore to and reason being that if I restore to my current hard drive and that goes south and a disaster is created. I really got no chance of fixing my hard drive and getting that back up. So that’s a little tip if you’re going to do something like that.
You know hedge your bets another hard drive, do the restore, do all those things boot it and once you get it up and running you’re good you can always just go back and do it again to your primary one. But I will keep you posted, hopefully this goes well for us and I will give you some good news on our next video, thanks for watching.
Backups save the day
So I got my computer back up. We did the Acronis image restoration. I had one from last night so did that to the new hard drive I am back up and running. It is almost 4 o’clock so I lost about 5 hours for whatever reason this restoration took forever and a day, normally it’s like 30 minutes. And luckily everything I have here is right accessible, so there’s the new hard drive I’m up and running and I am going to want to keeping the old one so when stuff like this happens kind of just have that back up.
That’s what you want to do, you want to have your plan B and C in place. Here my plan B was this deal here and I did try all the other options when I had this I would have been up the creek because the other options that I briefly spoke about on the previous video did not work.
